The need for such a literature was made apparent to the General Editors, Peter Doughty and Geoffrey Thornton, when they were working with the Schools Council Programme in Linguistics and English Teaching and after they had produced for the Programme, the widely acclaimed Language in Use and Exploring Language. Each volume in the series will focus upon a meeting point between the insights of Linguistic Science, often in conjunction with other social sciences, and the linguistic questions raised by the study of a particular aspect of individual behaviour or human society. The series is especially relevant to problems of teaching and learning, at all levels. Accent, Dialect and the School - This book is an attempt to discuss certain educational problems connected with language, using results from sociolinguistic research and concepts from linguistics generally. The main thesis of the book is that the language of normal children is not incorrect, slovenly or inadequate, and that teachers should encourage children to develop linguistic confidence and articulateness rather than concentration on bad grammar' and 'careless pronunciation'. It points out that differences of accent and dialect can cause educational difficulties, but that the main problem is often one of linguistic prejudice and intolerance. The main questions tackled are: is there such a thing as 'correct English'?; should teachers attempt to 'improve' hildren's accents?; ought children to speak and write standard English?; and are some children 'verbally deprived'? The book is intended for teachers, students and educationists with little or no technical background in linguistics, and it is hoped that it will lead to more informed discussion of what is often a very hotly debated series of topics. Peter Trudgill was born in Norwich in 1943. He studied modern languages at King's College Cambridge, and linguistics at the University of Edinburgh, where he obtained his Phd. in 1971. He has carried out sociolinguistic research into varieties of English, Albanian and Norwegian as well as work in the field of urban dialectology. He is currently lecturing in the Department of Linguistic Science at Reading University, where he teaches sociolinguistics and dialectology. ** Contents General Introduction 1 Introduction 5 Preface 9 1 Diversity in language 11 1 Variation in English 12 2 The causes of variation in English 14 3 Dialect and standard English i7 4 Style 19 5 Accent 20 6 Drawing boundaries 22 2 Good and bad language 24 1 Attitudes to language: linguistic or social? 28 2 Social judgements about accents 32 3 ‘Aesthetic’ judgements about accents Зб 4 ‘Right’ and ‘wrong’ in language 38 5 Two types of ‘mistake’ in English 42 3 Linguistic diversity and the school 46 1 Accents, reading and spelling 47 2 Accents and reading materials 49 3 Changing accents: reading 52 4 Changing accents: comprehension 53 5 Changing accents: social stigma 55 6 Leaving accents alone 57 7 Dialect diversity in the school 59 8 Attitudes to language in school 60 9 Summary 63 4 Why standard English? 65 1 Elimination of non-standard English 65 2 Bi-dialectalism 68 3 Appreciation of dialect differences 69 4 Correctness 71 5 Expressiveness 71 6 Logic 71 7 Educational progress 73 8 Hearing and understanding 73 9 Reading 74 10 Speaking 76 11 Writing 79 12 English as a world language 83 13 The special position of some West Indian children 84 5 Non-standard dialect, restricted code, and verbaldeprivation 88 1 Bernstein 89 2 ‘Restricted code’ and non-standard dialect 92 3 Verbal deprivation 94 4 Bernstein’s later work 98 5 Summary 99 6 Postscript 101 6 Conclusion 102 Further reading 104 Ключови думи: английски книги За поръчка Цена: 6,39 € (+ отделно цена за доставка) Поръчай Техническа грешка.
