The Flanagan family was the biggest in the small East End street. A noisy untidy brood they were too, but they didn't lack for love and affection, thanks to their energetic warm-hearted mother. When she began to carry her thirteenth child, no-one in the street was surprised, least of all Annie. "Ah well, 'tis the grace of God," she'd say. "I'll hope for a girl this time." Her wish came true and, blessed with blonde curls and a sunny nature, little Amy became the darling of the family. Their cosy world was shattered with the outbreak of World War II and the evacuation of London. Bereavement and the destruction of her home broke Annie's proud spirit and Amy had to take over as family provider. It was a heavy burden for her young shoulders and she found herself looking back wistfully to the happy years spent in the country as an evacuee. Her saviour appeared in the form of Sparky, an irrepressibly charming Cockney redhead, who swept her off her feet and into marriage. Life with Sparky was anything but dull and the years that followed were turbulent happy ones. Amy found herself increasingly torn between the conflicting needs of family and husband but put Sparky first when trouble with some of his shadier acquaintances forced them to uproot and flee to Canada. Tragedy loomed and even greater demands would be made on Amy's courage and endurance before she could settle down peacefully with her children. In this involving tale of the East End, Lena Kennedy brings a host of engaging characters to life with her usual charm and vivacity. * Lena Kennedy has become a much loved media personality as well as a hugely successful novelist since her first book, MAGGIE, was published in 1979. Now in her early seventies, she still lives among the East Enders who feature in all her stories, though none of the books are truly autobiographical. ‘I never take anything straight from life. But there are bits of me in all my books, she says. ‘Writing a novel is like knitting a great big knobbly jumper with lots of different patterns that come together to make one big pattern.'
