Тhe British Isles have a rich folkloric tradition that reaches back into a remote pagan past. While some of this folk tradition has faded with neglect, much of it has survived to this day. These remaining customs celebrate a calendar older than our own, a calendar that follows the cycles of the natural world. The Folklore Calendar provides a superb guide to ancient rites and customs throughout the year. January is marked by Wassailing in the Somerset cider orchards, a traditional appreciation of new growth in the heart of winter. With spring and summer come other acknowledgements of the early life of these lands including Well Dressing ceremonies in Derbyshire and the mysterious dance of the Staffordshire Deer Men. This enchanting work will intrigue all who have enjoyed a bewitching glimpse of Midsummer's Morning at Stonehenge, or a chilling taste of the festival of Hallowe'en. * CONTENTS Preface 1 January New Year's Day — Up-Helly-Aa at Lerwick, Shetland Isles - Wassailing the Apple Trees. 7 February Benediction of the Throat — Shrove Tuesday — Street Football on Shrove Tuesday - St. Valentine's Day. . . . . 17 March The Tichborne Dole, and some other Mediaeval Charities ....... 27 April Hocktide at Hungerford - Easter Customs - All Fools' Day-Vigil of St. Mark. . -41 May May Day Ceremonies — The Furry Dance, Helston, Cornwall - Well-Dressing Ceremonies in Derbyshire — Well-Dressing and Holy Wells — The Morris Dancers — The Festival of the Dunmow Flitch - Whit-Monday at South Harting, Sussex - The Knutsford Festival. 65 June Riding the Marches at Hawick, Scotland — Town Criers' Contest at Pewsey, Wiltshire -Midsummer Morning at Stonehenge — The Druids' Festival at Stonehenge. . .123 July The Historic Tynwald Ceremony — The Vintners' Company. . . . 147 August Punch and Judy-Wardmote of the Woodmen of Arden, Meriden, Warwickshire—The Lore of Harvest —Rush-Bearing at Grasmere—High¬land Games and Gatherings. . . 153 September The Dance of the Deermen - Some Old English Country Fairs. . . . . -169 October Fox-Hunting, Etc. — Hallowe'en. . 195 November Bonfire Night — London's Lord Mayor's Show, and Mayoral Customs Generally — Wroth Silver: St. Martin's Day .... 203 December The Christmas Ceremony at Killin, Perthshire — The Boy Bishop of Berden, Essex —The Christmas Mummers ..... 213
