Поредица "A Collection of British and American Writers". * Briefly, ABOUT THE BOOK A LANTERN FOR JEREMY is the story of a small boy's view of what occurs in the streets and homes of the Polish ghetto where he lives. Yet the story of the boy and what he sees has so been written by V. J. Jerome, its author, that it breaks the confines of locale and becomes a tale for the world to hear. The year is 1905. Thionary struggle in Tsarist Russia and Tsarist Poland rumbles into the hemmed-in streets of the boy's village, invading iron-clad tradition and religious taboo. Translated into Dutch, Italian, German, Japanese, Czech and Chinese, A LANTERN FOR JEREMY has become a symbol. For the lantern which lighted Jeremy's way - the need of his people - is the lantern which has made bright the way for millions in our time. ** ABOUTTHEAUTHOR On October 12, 18 9 6, V. J. Jerome was born in the ghetto of a small Polish town - just such a ghetto and town as he depicts in A LANTERN FOR JEREMY. On October 12, 19 5 6, V. J. Jerome celebrated his 60th birthday in the cell of the U.S. prison where he is serving a 3-year sentence under the Smith (Thought Control) Act. Between the Polish ghetto of his birth and his prison cell of today spreads a lifetime of writing, thinking and doing in the service of humanity. Steel bars have not quite cut Jerome off from the stream of life. His friends among the prisoners are legion. They seek his ad¬vice about books; under prison auspices he lectures to them on aesthetics and on current events. In prison he has written ten chapters of a new novel and done research for a book of essays on Shakespeare and the Bible.
