Поредица "A Collection of British and American Writers". * BRIEFLY, ABOUTTHE BOOK In THE CRUSADERS, Stefan Heym wrote the unforgettable story of Americans in uniform fighting in Europe, as many believed, for a better world. In GOLDSBOROUGH, author Heym tells the unforgettable story of Americans out of uniform struggling for a better life on their native soil. You won't find Goldsborough on any map of the United States. Yet the town is as American as Washington, NewYork, Chicago,Pittsburgh or Hollywood. And its people are truly American: blue-blood and foreign born; first generation and those whose ancestors arrived as the chattel of slave-traders; Americans whose fetish is the dollar and Americans who dream of and fight for a better America. First and foremost a great teller of tales, Stefan Heym once again has written a novel that will sweep you in the storm of its movement and story. ** BRIEFLY, ABOUT THE AUTHOR Stefan Heym was born in 1913 in what is now Karl-Marx-Stadt, Germany. His poetry about man's struggle for peace and a better world made it necessary for him to flee Hitler's Germany. He found refuge in Roosevelt's U.S.A. In 1943, he became Private Heym in the U.S. Army; in 1944, Sergeant Heym was awarded the Bronze Star Medal during the Ardennes Battle. At the war's end, he was a commissioned officer. In 1952, Mr. Heym requested of the German Democratic Republic asylum from a witch-hunting America. At the same time, refusing to serve in the aggressive war againsttheKoreanpeople, Mr. Heym returned his reserve officer's commission and his Bronze Star Medal to U.S. President Eisenhower. GOLDSBOROUGH, like all of Mr. Heym's novels, was written in English. The Panther Books edition was the first publication of this new work in the original language.
