THE STORY BEHIND JACQUELINE SUSANN'S YARGO Written during the early 1950s, Jacqueline SusamTs Yargo "thoroughly reflects the romanticism of the young Susann and is written in a style inimitably her own," Marc Jaffe, Bantam's president and editor in chief, has said of the novel. "There is an innocence and idealism about it, as well as a hopeful message about the strength of human love that many readers will find touching and appealing." Irving Mansfield, her husband, recalls that it was 1953 when his wife first showed him a draft of Yargo. "She had discovered Ray Bradbury, and the manuscript she showed me was a kind of science fiction love story. Her model for the male protagonist was Yul Brynner, who had just skyrocketed to fame as the star of The King and I. Then, in 1956 she took the manuscript along on a trip to Europe and made some changes. We returned on the Liberte, where we met George Chasin who was an agent for MCA. Jackie gave him the manuscript. Chasin sent it to several studios, but it met with little response because interest in science fiction film projects was at a low ebb. Ignored, the manuscript remained with Chasin until November 1977, when accidentally, he came across it while cleaning out a little-used filing cabinet." Once Susann began writing her books, she never returned to Yargo, as far as is known, except for a brief period when she considered using part of the story as the last section of Once Is Not Enough. Oscar Dystel, chairman and Chief Executive officer of Bantam Books, recalls this incident: "I was haunted by the familiarity of Yargo as I read it. Finally, I remembered a long afternoon years ago when Jackie and I were working at her apartment. She outlined the story of her next novel, which would become Once Is Not Enough. But the ending she proposed puzzled me. She wanted to have the heroine lifted into space and onto a distant planet where she would meet her perfect love. I was incredulous at the time. Space fantasy had never been associated with Jackie's style, and it wasn't an element necessary for the story. I encouraged her to leave the heroine alone at the end. Now, having read Yargo, 1 see that the story is strikingly similar to the one she told me that afternoon so many years ago." Mansfield says, "It's ironic that now, over twenty-five years after she first conceived the story, Jackie's Yargo will finally reach its audience. She really would be thrilled."
