Noel Coward's name is legendary in the theatre. As playwright, songwriter, and actor, he has amused and delighted countless audiences on both sides of the Atlantic. But Mr. Coward, whom Bennett Cerf called "the man who can do everything," has never confined his considerable talents to the stage and screen. In 1960 Pomp and Circumstance, his first novel, was an immediate best seller, and over the years he has written two volumes of short stories, To Step Aside and Star Quality, from which these seven now are taken. All of them display the unerring and ironic wit, the lighthearted and acute approach to human nature that have made him famous. "What Mad Pursuit?" is the painfully hilarious picture of an English writer's weekend with a Long Island hostess. "A Richer Dust" dissects a British movie star in Hollywood during the Second World War. In "Star Quality" a young playwright has his first taste of an actress's temperament, and "Mr. and Mrs. Edgehill" introduces us to an engaging and touching British colonial couple on a very small island. Mr. Coward has also written a short introduction to this Dolphin edition. * Contents 13 A Richer Dust 59 Mr. and Mrs. Edgehill 105 This Time To-morrow 161 Aunt Tittie 201 What Mad Pursuit? 255 The Kindness of Mrs. Radcliffe 321 Star Quality
