(If an Introduction is necessary) The proposal to write this book was quite unexpected for me, for it was made at a moment quite out of tune with my plans. Nevertheless, I accepted it right away, because the General, the athlete and man is above all a great personality for whom I have a profound respect and have nurtured great sympathies ever since I was a child. I knew that my task would be very difficult, mostly because my interest and professional curiosity had to prevail over his proverbial modesty. It is common knowledge that what he likes to talk least of all is about himself. But I had to succeed in my mission, for the sake of him, of all who are fond of him and respect him, and mostly for the sake of all those, who, inspired by his patriotism and Spartan selflessness in the name of the people, the homeland and sport, willfollow his example for the glory of our socialist motherland.
