Второ преработено и допълнено издание. * Preface This second supplemented and revised edition is a follow up to the first which presented an overview of the history of the monastery The Dormition of the Holy Virgin, or, as it is popularly known the monastery of the Holy Mother of God. We also include assessments by specialists and Bulgarian erudite scholars who have studied the monastery as a repository of specimens of sacral architecture and murals which have opened a window on the wonderful world of art. We have tried to avoid certain errors and to rectify certain inaccuracies for which we are most grateful to all who have pointed them to us out of goodwill and friendly sentiment. The first edition sold out quickly which shows that Bulgarian and foreign art connoisseurs appreciative of the holy cloister as a national treasure, a bulwark of Faith, of nationhood and piety over the centuries come here on a guided tour and also take with them something in writing that they might read at leisure. We hope that those who have not visited the monastery and first learn about it from these pages will arrange to visit the place in order to get a perception of the Bulgarian's creative genius throughout the centuries. This modest work is published with the blessing of His Holiness Maxim, Patriarch of Bulgaria, according to the decision of the cooperation of the incumbent abbot of the Bachkovo Monastery "Dormition of the Holy Virgin", the Right Reverend Bishop Naum of Agatonikia.
