Written by three experienced teachers of the subject, this O level sociology textbook examines our own society in depth and describes other societies, past and present, so that comparisons may be made. As well as providing plenty of sound statistical data, the book explains the main methods of investigation used by the sociologist and encourages students to obtain and evaluate information for themselves. * Preface The last five years has seen a prolific growth of interest at secondary education level in the social sciences generally and in sociology in particular. This has been accompanied by considerable debate as to whether the ideas, concepts, and approaches of sociology are appropriate educational experiences for students at Ordinary Level GCE. A major problem facing the teacher at this level has been the lack of suitable texts and material with which to work: the choice being between simplified material suitable for less mature students and the sophisticated academic texts with which the university undergraduate wrestles. This book meets the needs of students and teachers of sociology at 'sixteen-plus' level in so far as it not only provides a digest of appropriate material in the relevant areas, but also attempts to convey the ideas and skills which are required of examination candidates in this subject. It is impressively supported by fitting illustrations which clarify and enliven the text and provide stimulation for further discussion. The work-exercises effectively take the student beyond the book into further reading and research skills which are increasingly becoming important in external examinations. I am reassured to find textbooks being produced at this level for students and teachers by those with appropriate experience necessary to appreciate and help in the task of presenting ideas and material which are of fundamental importance to the various external examination courses in sociology. I also feel that both students and teacher will find the book extremely interesting and stimulating as well as valuable to their courses.
