The performers and technical collaborators obviously play a vital part but the role of the organizer is often sadly underestimated. All those responsible for theatrical administration are only too aware that the success or failure of an undertaking can depend on their efficiency, and their burden has been made no lighter by the fact that no standard work has existed to which they could refer. This present book aims to fulfil this important need. It has been written for both professionals and reluctant amateurs who are concerned with "putting on plays", running theatres, festivals, and art centres. First and foremost this is a practical handbook offering advice and providing all the relevant information. It draws together some of the rules and regulations which are too often discovered after the event and indicates the general pattern of purpose towards which the general and specialized techniques of management are directed. Since there is so much common ground in the administration of the arts, much attention has been given here to the activities which are being co-ordinated for the benefit of the general public by theatres, local authorities, arts associations and other public bodies. These range from the mounting of drama, opera and ballet to concerts, exhibitions of the visual arts, lectures, conferences and the use of a communal building for the related interests of the community. All these pursuits make demands on the theatre manager of today, whose knowledge and background are required to extend even more widely, and to overlap with the interests of education and social development. * The Author ELIZABETH SWEETING M.B.E. is at present Administrator, Oxford Playhouse, Oxford University Theatre. She is a member of the boards of the Theatre Royal, Bury St. Edmunds, of Prospect Productions, and is a committee member of the Association of British Theatre Technicians. Her distinguished record in management ranges over amateur, professional, and University theatre, and she has trained extensively both here and abroad with drama and opera companies. In 1964 she produced the report for the Gulbenkian Foundation on The Audience for the Provincial Theatre. As Festival Manager for the first eight years of the Aldeburgh Festival of Music and the Arts, she has been responsible for the inception and pattern of a world famous festival. In 1956, with Frank Hauser, she was responsible for the re-establishment of professional theatre in Oxford and for the formulation of the policy which has proved a successful pattern for repertory in the provinces. ** CONTENTS Foreword by Percy Corry v Preface vii Part One: THE PATTERN OF THEATRE AND RELATED ARTS 1 The Pattern of Theatre and Related Arts in Britain 3 2 Civic Theatres 8 3 Arts Centres, Arts Associations and Festivals 14 4 The Theatre and Young People 20 5 Theatre and University 25 6 The Amateur Theatre 33 7 Theatre Buildings 37 8 Training of Theatre Personnel 44 9 Recruitment of Theatre Personnel 50 10 Related Arts in the Theatre 54 11 The Arts Council of Great Britain 59 12 Organizations connected with Theatre 65 13 Theatre Publications 74 Part Two: ADMINISTRATION 14 Company Formation 81 15 Boards of Management 83 16 Staff Structure of a Theatre with a Resident Company 87 17 The Artistic Director and His Staff 89 18 The Administrator and His Staff 98 19 The Administrator as Licensee 104 20 Theatre Control 121 21 Publicity and Public Relations 126 22 The Box Office 146 23 The Accountant 151 24 Theatre Finance 157 25 Transfers from Provincial Theatres to the West End 184 26 Touring Abroad 186 27 West End Managements 193 28 The Management of a University Theatre 195 Conclusion 197 Appendix 1.
