In this outrageously funny peep between her loo nets, Maureen Lipman describes how life is for her. Best known as a brilliantly inventive comedy actress, she displays in this, her first book, the same originality and razor-sharp wit that she brings to her unforgettable characterizations, taking us on an hilarious whirlwind tour of her adventures (and misadventures) on and offstage. In How Was It For You? we meet an array of characters no one would dare to invent - not least Maureen herself, whose life, from her account of it, often seems to resemble a sit-com which has been rejected as too bizarre. Here we see her frying mints in her ballgown, rashly advising Barbra Streisand on her singing, knocking on doors on a freezing February night clad only in a bikini and suntan lotion, having her teeth super-glued by a jazz-playing Peer of the Realm, carrying on a vendetta with a megalomaniac cash-dispenser, outraging another American superstar with the Lipman Way to Health and Beauty, and even hand-rearing a racing tortoise. Life with Lipman is predictable only in its unpredictability. How was it for her? Well, she could write a book ... Maureen Lipman was born in Hull, studied drama at L.A.M.D.A. (the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art), and played her first part at the Watford Palace Theatre. She has been a member of both the National Theatre and the Royal Shakespeare Company, and her West End appearances include Outside Edge and Messiah (both S.W.E.T. - Society of West End Theatres — Award nominations) and See How They Run, for which she won the first 'Larry' (Laurence Olivier) Award and the Variety Club of Great Britain Best Actress Award. On TV she is best known for her role in Agony, and her latest TV plays include Absurd Person Singular, Absent Friends, Love's Labour's Lost, On Your Way Riley, Smiley's People and The Knowledge. Her performances in the TV plays Outside Edge and Rolling Home, and in the film Educating Rita, all earned her B.A.F.T.A. (British Academy of Film and Television Arts) Award nominations. She writes a monthly column in Options magazine, and is at present recording a new situation comedy for Thames TV. She is married to the playwright and saint Jack Rosenthal of Bar Mitgvah Boy, The Knowledge and Yentl fame. Their productions include Amy, 11 and Adam, 9, who recently nominated her for the Most Clapped Out Mother in Muswell Hill Award. She won. * Contents 1. Home. Help!
