Translated from the Slovak by Andrew Cincura Afterword by Peter Petro * SLOVAK LITERATURE is still a Cinderella even among the Central European literatures. Yet, one feels, if a single author represents the best in Slovak literature, that author is J. C. Hronský (1896-1960). Hronský transcends any attempt to limit his significance to the genre of the village novel. He does not idealize the village, nor does he artificially preserve folklore, but he sees the village in relief to the cruelty and savagery that are the obverse of the traditional lyricism found in evoked village life. Lyrical, poetic figures and symbols exist side by side with realistic characters. Thus the opening of Jozef Mak is bathed in a green mist that is and is not of this world, and Jozef Mak's life starts full of suffering that is never voiced, though it never lacks meaning: a meaning ultimately liberating. A poor man is traditionally close to God. A totally destitute one is closer still. Such proximity is Mak's birthright, yet he too goes astray, and only purification through suffering (a leitmotif in Hronský) offers hope. And indeed Mak survives in the ordinary man, in the mass man if you like, for his inarticulateness grants him anonymity as well as the distinction of a symbol for the downtrodden anywhere and any time. Thus the essentially and even clinically authentic Slovak villager, as no one else could draw him, becomes also Hronský's most universal creation. —from the Afterword by Peter Petro University of British Columbia
