What could be the secret of THE TAPIOLA SOUND that shines through in the excellent performances of the Tapiola Choir from Finland? This is what sparked the interest of Walton Music Corporation for a book about this group of young singers and their director, professor Erkki Pohjola. In THE TAPIOLA SOUND Erkki Pohjola - together with editor Matti Tuomisto - is sharing his thoughts about the choir and about thirty years of inspiring work, finding the talent in young people and nurturing them into world famous music ambassadors for the youth movement. The book is not for choral directors and music pedagogues only, but also celebrates all the families and their interest in music as an enrichment of life. * INDEX Prelude 7 FOCUS ON THE CHILD 11 The old and new instrument • Discipline or free will • Who dares wins • Avoiding the child star trap • Room for creativity SELF-PORTRAIT BEFORE THE TAPIOLA CHOIR 31 I'm one of us - my Bothnian legacy • The black sheep • Sporting mad • Music rises to the surface • Waking up late gives you a headache •The University of Life • Only a pedagogue? • Pastures now • A musical family tree NOT JUST SINGING, BUT PLAYING TOO 19 Relevations in Budapest • Musica, the road to a creative method • From Children's Song to the Symphony • A musicosociological phenomenon • The Tapiola Choir will now play...
