Compiled and edited by Frank Colquhoun With a Foreword by THE RIGHT REVEREND LORD COGGAN * Parish Prayers and Contemporary Parish Prayers are regularly used in many thousands of churches. Invaluable to all who lead services, both have stood the test of time. New Parish Prayers continues this tradition of masterly compilation, and will be as greatly appreciated as its predecessors. "The prayers cover a broader field than those in previous publications. For this reason I hope the book may serve a wider purpose and prove useful not only in church work in the narrower sense but also in schools, colleges, youth clubs and the like. Some of the material is also useful for personal devotion." All the prayers in this new book are in modern idiom. The themes range from the Church Year and Our Nation and Society, through prayers for marriage and friendship, illness and grief, to thanksgivings and prayers for daily life. Over 240 prayers have been written specially for this book, and approximately half the total number of over 570 are now published for the first time. Contributors include Timothy Dudley-Smith, John Poulton, Stanley Pritchard and Christopher Idle. A number of prayers are also included from the new Book of Common Prayer of the Episcopal Church of the United States of America. ** Frank Colquhoun, M.A., L.Th., a graduate of University College, Durham has been a Canon Residentiary and Vice-Dean of Norwich Cathedral. Previously he was Chancellor of Southwark Cathedral and PrincipaLof the Southwark Ordination Course. He is now retired and lives in Bexhill-on-Sea. *** I never have Frank Colquhoun's prayers far from my reach, and I welcome a new selection. Robert Runcie, Archbishop of Canterbury We owe Canon Colquhoun a deep debt of gratitude for his work in this field over many years...I hope that the book will be used by many in their private devotions. I hope even more earnestly that it will be used by those, clerical and lay, who have the responsibility of leading public worship. Donald Coggan Parish clergy particularly will be grateful to Frank Colquhoun for this further volume of prayers, collected from many parts of the Church and from many prayerful individuals. It will not only help us to find suitable prayers for almost every season and occasion, but will lead us into prayers of our own. George Appleton
