To the reader The Material World is about chemistry. It's about the materials the world is made from and the way new materials can be produced. Studying chemistry helps you understand how materials behave, whether they are in the kitchen, in your clothes or in a builder's yard. It helps us understand how to make better materials, how to get the energy we need and how to protect the environment. The book is split up into short topics. Each topic includes Activities (with a blue background) — things to do in the lab and at home — and Questions (mauve background). There are also case studies and extension exercises (with a green background) which take some of the ideas a bit further. You'll notice that there are references to the two other books in the Nelson Balanced Science series. Michael Roberts book The Living World is mainly about biology and Ken Dobson's The Physical World is mainly about'physics. By using our books together we hope you will enjoy finding out about science — and that you'll want to study it further.
