Prentice Hall Advances in Computer Science Series This book deals with the design of expert, knowledge-based systems and deductive database systems and will be of interest to professionals who are concerned with the design and maintenance of large, integrated, corporate knowledge bases. Debenham's approach: • is deliberately compatible with current approaches to information systems design. In particular, it fits comfortably with approaches based on either the BR or ER philosophies. • is quite systematic from the first "knowledge acquisition" phase to the final "knowledge base maintenance" phase. It is suitable for application by a single analyst or by a design team. • is founded on a rigorous treatment of the "normalization" of knowledge which ensures that each "real chunk" of knowledge is represented in one place and in one place only. • is suitable for the design of knowledge-based systems which interact with existing "information systems". • addresses the key problem of constraints for knowledge. This feature is a key component in the construction of knowledge systems which are designed for maintenance. The text is illustrated with examples expressed in logic programming. Logic programming has been chosen because it is widely understood. The book contains new results and methods that are not available elsewhere and refrains from discussing those aspects of expert systems and deductive database systems which are widely reported in the established literature.
