‘I’m too young to be a missie,’ says Iris Chisholm. But a missie she is, in charge of a one-teacher school in a remote glen. She has come to Green Cairns to recover from the shock of her husband’s death. And the shock of discovering his secret gambling habits have left her with no home, no money - nothing. Her pupils’ problems haunt Iris, become her mission. She will restore little Lucy’s stammering speech to a smooth flow. She will make the self-elected mute, Colin, talk. She will remove the huge chip on James’s shoulder. She can do all this, and in the doing her own sorrows will ease. All the while she is drawn to the golden-tongued lawyer, Michael. And the gentle handyman, Chas. So absorbed is she, she does not notice what is happening to her own children. That Scott her son has become fabulously embroiled with the wife of the local drug dealer. That Sophy has disappeared into some lonely place inside her head. It’s time for Iris to be a mother to her own children again - whatever her choices about the future. * Praise for Isla Dewar’s novels: ‘Both wise and funny’ Shena Mack ay 'Crackling with wit, and shot through with sharp observations’ Woman & Home 'Observant and needle-sharp - very funny’ The Times ‘Genuinely moving and evocative’ Scotland on Sunday ** When Iris Chisholm arrives in the tiny Highland community of Green Cairns, she's still in a state of shock - not so much from her husband's untimely death as from the discovery that he'd gambled away all their money and even their home. In addressing the problems of the children at the school where she becomes the only teacher, Iris finds distraction from her worries. Further distractions come in the shape of golden-tongued lawyer Michael and the gentle handyman, Chas. The locals are deliciously outraged at the scandal of a school marm who seems to have a sex life, and alarmed yet heartened at her championing of her pupils' needs, from swimming lessons to kinder dentistry. So embroiled is Iris that she does not notice what is happening to her own near-adult children - who need her just as much as the waifs of Green Cairns...
