A GAMBLE WITH HEARTS Barbara Cartland, the celebrated romantic novelist, historian, playwright, lecturer, political speaker and television personality, has now written nearly two hundred books. She has had a number of historical books published and several biographical ones, including a biography of her brother, Major Ronald Cartland, who was the first Member of Parliament to be killed in the war. The book has a preface by Sir Winston Churchill. In private life, Miss Cartland is a Dame of Grace of St John of Jerusalem, and one of the first women after a thousand years to be admitted to the Chapter General. She has fought for better conditions and salaries for midwives and nurses and, as President of the Hertfordshire Branch of the Royal College of Midwives, she has been invested with the first Badge of Office ever given in Great Britain, which was subscribed to by the midwives themselves. She has also championed the cause of old people and had the laws regarding gypsies altered. She founded the first Romany Gypsy Camp in the world, which was christened ‘Barbaraville’ by the gypsies. Barbara Cartland is deeply interested in Vitamin Therapy and is President of the National Association for Health. “I am sure I shall be lucky for you. I am certain of it!” Amid the glittering ballrooms and salons of pleasure-loving Baden-Baden in the eighteen-sixties, lovely Selina Wade forgot the unhappy past. Lured to Paris and forced to kill a dissolute Marquis to protect her virtue, Selina was rescued from a life of shame by the impecunious Quintus Tiverton, a gambler living on his wits. But many more exciting adventures were to befall them both before Selina gave Quintus her heart. When his kisses took possession of her, making her completely and absolutely his captive, Selina knew she had won her gamble with love .. . A Pan Original
