Her writing career began in 1956, when she got a job as a cub reporter on the Middlesex Independent. Following several short stories for women’s magazines, Jilly Cooper started contributing a regular column to The Sunday Times in 1969. She stayed with them until 1982 when she joined The Mail on Sunday as a bi-monthly columnist. Her first book, How to Stay Married, was written in 1969. Since then she has written or helped to compile twenty-five others including six romances: Emily, Bella, Harriet, Octavia, Prudence and Imogen, and the bestselling Riders and Rivals. Her most recent non-fiction books are Animals at War and The Common Years. She has also written a television series, It's Awfully Bad for Your Eyes, Darling, and has often appeared as a television guest herself. Jilly Cooper is married to publisher, Leo Cooper, and they live in the Cotswolds. They have two children, Felix and Emily, four cats and two mongrels.
