'War is hell, but that's not the half of it, because war is also mystery and terror and adventure and courage and discovery and holiness and pity and despair and longing and love. War is nasty; war is fun. War is thrilling; war is drudgery. War makes you a man; war makes you dead' * Ranging from the First World War to the Gulf War, this collection of stories investigates the nature of military experience: from call-ups, the field of battle and comradeship, to leave, hospitalisation and trauma in later life. Truly international in scope, it includes stories by Erich Maria Remarque and Pat Barker, Isaac Babel and Ernest Hemingway, Heinrich Boll and Norman Mailer, JG Ballard and Tim O'Brian, Julian Barnes and Louis de Bernières. Together they form a uniquely powerful evocation of the horrors of war. Sebastian Faulks’s books include the number one bestseller A Week in December, Human Traces, On Green Dolphin Street, Charlotte Gray and Birdsong, which has sold more than three million copies. In 2011 he wrote and presented the four-part television series Faulks on Fiction for BBC Two. Jorg Hensgen was born in Germany and studied at the universities of Wuppertal, Gottingen and Hamburg. He now lives in Exeter and works as a publisher’s editor. ** Contents Bruce Chatwin Volunteers 1 Louis-Ferdinand Céline Could I Be the Last Coward on Earth? 6 David Malouf Invisible Enemies 17 Erich Maria Remarque How Long It Takes For a Man to Die! 26 A.D.
