'Enjoyable ... moving. The author loves her subject and writes with conviction' SUNDAY TIMES In the early years of this century, many Basques left their homeland in the Pyrenees, between France and Spain, to seek a better life in the New World. Most passed through the great port of Liverpool on their way. The family of little Manuel Echaniz stayed. The Liverpool Basque is the story of Manuel's childhood and coming of age in the teeming streets of the Mersey docklands. It is a story of poverty, comradeship, hardship and generosity. Brought up by women while the men are at sea, Manuel grows up with a fierce pride in his heritage and a powerful will to survive in an era of deprivation and unemployment. Against all odds, he gets himself an education of sorts, and sets off on the long voyage of his life. 'A gentle book... evocative but not sentimental.' NORTHERN ECHO 'Broad in scope, fast-moving, and redolent of a busy manufacturing port at the turn of the century. Manuel... and all the rest of the relatives and neighbours spring from the page full of vitality and indomitable spirit.' BIRMINGHAM POST 'A beautiful, original story.' THE CITIZEN * About the Author Helen Forrester was born in Hoylake, Cheshire, the eldest of seven children. For many years, until she married, her home was Liverpool — a city that features prominently in her work. For the past thirty years she has made her home in Alberta, Canada. She has travelled widely in Europe, India, the United States and Mexico. Helen Forrester has written four bestselling volumes of autobiography: Twopence to Cross the Mersey; Liverpool Miss; By the Waters of Liverpool and Lime Street at Two. She is also the author of a number of equally successful novels: Thursday's Child; The Latchkey Kid; Liverpool Daisy ; Three Women of Liverpool-, The Moneylenders of Shahpur; Yes, Mama, for which she won the Writers’ Guild of Alberta Award for the best novel of 1988, and The Lemon Tree. In 1988 she was awarded an honorary D. Litt. by the University of Liverpool in recognition of her achievements as an author.
