Like many adventures, this one began with a holiday in Logres (land of the West and King Arthur), the discovery of an ancient map and a search for a buried Grail. But then it turned into something much more important and frightening. This is the first of the five books which form Susan Cooper’s The Dark is Rising sequence, of which number four, The Grey King, won the American Newbery Medal in 1975. * Great-Uncle Merry met Simon, Jane and Barney at the station in his vast old estate car. The engine gave a hiccup and a roar, and then they were away. TMow you’re in the real Cornwall,’ Great-Uncle Merry shouted. ‘Logres is before you.’ 'Wnat does he mean, Logres?’ demanded Jane. ‘He means the land of the West,’ Barney said unexpectedly. ‘It’s the old name for Cornwall. King Arthur's name.’ Barney’s greatest heroes were King Arthur and his knights, and he had been longing to see the West Country, it gave him a splendid feeling that he would in some way be coming home. It was Barney, too, who found the parchment in the attic. Its crabbed letters and roughly drawn map opened the way to a perilous and exhilarating quest. Suddenly the children were lost in a world half real, half fantasy. Tney discovered that when the old kingdom was broken up by the invader and the last battle of Arthur was lost, a strange knight had come to this spot with a grail that told upon its sides all the true story of Arthur. If they could now find this grail in its hiding place, all its power for good would be released on the world. ‘This is your quest,’ said Great-Uncle Merry. “You must find the way every time yourselves. I am the guardian, no more. I can take no part and give you no help, beyond guarding you all the way.’ In the event, the children were glad of a watchful guardian to protect them from the enemies closing in from the village and the mysterious white yacht with its wicked passengers, surveying the coast so relentlessly, day by day, in its own evil search. For readers of ten and over. ** Susan Cooper was bom in 1935 and gained a degree in English at Oxford, where she became the first woman ever to edit the university magazine, Cherwell. Soon after coming down, she joined the Sunday Times as a reporter (her first boss was Ian Fleming, then running the Atticus column) and later became a senior feature writer and Deputy News Editor. In 1963 she left to marry an American scientist, and now lives in Massachusetts, U.S.A. She is the author of a novel, Mandrake, and a book on America, Behind the Golden Curtain. Over Sea, Under Stone is the first book in a sequence of five. The rest are The Dark is Rising, Greenwitch, The Grey King and Silver on the Tree, Also in Puffins: Dawn of Fear.
