For the student nurse, confronted for the first time with such a rapidly expanding subject, the prospect is really daunting. This book is written primarily for the beginner. In this new edition the whole work has been revised and the type entirely reset. Many new illustrations have replaced those that were worn or out of date. All the x-ray pictures are new as are many of the line drawings. The sections on anaesthesia, radiotherapy and the sexually transmitted diseases have been rewritten. The chapters on orthopaedics and gynaecology have been extensively overhauled. The metric system now takes pride of place over all others. In this the ninth edition of a well established book will be found a concise survey of surgical diagnosis and treatment which is thoroughly up to date. It is hoped that it will prove most helpful to the student nurse as an introduction to surgery and that it will prove of real help when preparing for examinations. Ninth Edition ** Preface to the Ninth Edition Wilson Harlow, who created this book a quarter of a century ago, was a remarkable man and it is sad to have to report his death in August 1972. He steered this rightly popular book through innumerable new editions and reprintings and his character is stamped on every page. It is almost ten years ago that he asked me to take over the task of editing the book when he retired, but of course he never did retire from writing, which he did so well. Now I find the reins of office thrust in my hands and I have done my best to retain the individual character of the book while bringing it up to date. Of the original contributors, a number are now dead and many others retired. I have therefore called on colleagues especially at the Royal Postgraduate Medical School, Hammersmith Hospital, for help, and I am indeed grateful to them, especially Dr. John Norman for the chapters on anaesthesia and Dr. Mary Catterall for a new section on radiotherapy, Mr. Peter Fells for the section on eye surgery, Mr. Sean Hughes for orthopaedics and Mr. Winston for obstetrics and gynaecology. In addition, Dr. Duncan Catterall of the Middlesex Hospital has rewritten the chapter on venereal disease, Dr. John Beales, now of St. Thomas’ Hospital has provided all the new X-ray plates and Dr. Peter Cardew of St. Mary’s Hospital, Department of audio-visual aids, has supplied many new photographs. Professor Calnan and Mr. Ian Burn have provided some specialised illustrations and the Department of Medical Illustration at the Royal Postgraduate Medical School has been a tower of strength in filling in the gaps. In addition to those whose names are duly acknowledged in the text, I have consulted many people who have all given willingly of their own expertise and I include among them many nurses and sisters, housemen and registrars. In particular Dr. John Northover has read all the galley proofs. I have used all manner of reference works and delved deeply into my own stock of clinical photographs. I am particularly grateful to Mr. Frank Price for the new line drawings and to Mr. Jasper of Messrs Down Bros, for all the new illustrations of instruments and equipment. My wife has spent many hours collecting and collating the illustrations, reading proofs and giving constant help without which I should never have completed my task. It is not enough to edit and rewrite the text and provide the illustrations, the book would still not appear without the skill of the publisher. Miss Martyn has prepared everything for the printer, an enormous task. I cannot thank her enough, nor my old friend Mr. Owen Evans, managing director of William Heinemann Medical Books Ltd., who has been mentor, guide and support at every stage of production.
