PREACHING, that long neglected and much required skill, has two competing strains. On the one hand preachers need to hold onto the truth of the message, striking the line of scripture cleanly, never adding to it or removing from it. On the other hand preachers need to communicate - to reach out, and with the help of the Spirit, grab the heart of the listener. It’s not an easy balance to find, but Stephen McQuoid offers a refreshing dose of sensible and thoroughly Biblical advice to help us. ‘Stephen McQuoid’s readily digestible and stimulating new book will help seasoned preachers (and enable them to give themselves a good check-up). Beginners will benefit from the straightforward and sensible counsel he gives. I am grateful for the labour of love this little manual represents.’ Sinclair B Ferguson St George’s Tron Church, Glasgow ‘Stephen McQuoid will succeed in making preachers think hard about the passion, preparation, style and development of their preaching gift. I trust it will be a blessing and a challenge to them - it certainly was for me.’ Derek Lamont St Columba’s Free Church of Scotland, Edinburgh ‘Its great strength is the emphasis placed on preaching accurately: relaying what is in the text and context rather than bending it to suit the preacher's convenience - a cardinal sin unblushingly committed in many pulpits up and down the land!’ Dr Tony Sargent International Christian College, Glasgow STEPHEN MCQUOID is the principal of Tilsley College, part of the ministry of Gospel Literature Outreach. He teaches theology and evangelism and ercises a national and international preaching ministry.
