MS МURPHY'S LAW First there was Murphy’s Law. Now Ms Murphy and a band of other women old and young get their own back on Mother Nature in general and the male of the species in particular. ★ Modern drugs are wonderful. They enable a wife with pneumonia to nurse her husband through ’flu. ★ It is easier to effect a repair on a hydroelectric power station than to get an iron mended. ★ The position most favoured by the medical profession in the delivery of a baby is Flat On Your Back. This is based on the observation that a turtle in this position is absolutely helpless. ★ Children are ashamed to bring their friends home to the house they beat the hell out of. ★ The biggest turn-off in the world is a man working his way through the erogenous zones according to the manual. * About the Authors Faith Hines was born in 1935 and educated at Mayortorne, a public school for the children of gentlemen farmers. After a period as a reporter, Faith married while still in her teens. She returned to full-time work when her three children reached school age. In the sixties, ATV’s Arthur Haynes Show launched her on a career in television. Three years with BBC’s serial Compact followed and Faith became a household face and name as a television personality and commercial model. During this time she developed her flair for dialogue and gained first-hand knowledge of script-writing. A regular contributor to publications such as Cosmopolitan, Faith now specialises in documentary features and in devising TV games shows. She is married to a successful stockbrocker and lives in Tunbridge Wells with her husband and two daughters. She is currently engaged in writing a series of books for children. When she was a girl, all Pam Brown wanted to do was fly aeroplanes, but as nobody agreed to that, she ended up trying her luck at a wide variety of jobs. The greatest adventure of her youth was an attempt to sail round the world which ended prematurely and wetly in Tangiers harbour. All this left her ‘singularly unskilled and unqualified’ when, at thirtyfive, she found herself with three small children and an even smaller income. However, it had given her adaptability and eminently suited her to spot life’s little ironies and Murphian inevitabilities! For the next twenty years she scraped a living by becoming in turn a school kitchen worker, a dinner lady, a private tutor, a ‘hack artist’ and a manufacturer of doll’s house food. Now her children are more or less ofT her hands she has settled for a double life as char and writer. She lives in the spaces not occupied by books, kids, cats and stick insects and writes and scrubs by turns. Her first solo book, Mutterings of a Char, is also published in 1984.
