* The contents of this volume — letters, talks and speeches — reveal to the young reader a striking picture of Georgi Dimitrov, the renowned fighter against fascism and foi a new and just social order. A great heart beats in them, which burnt with ardent love of youth ; they reveal a daring mind which, with penetration and persistence, indicated the true road to escape from bondage, the road to freedom and cultural progress, the road of a struggle to preserve and consolidate peace. In the letters, talks and speeches of Georgi Dimitrov are expressed the thoughts, ideas and experience of this great revo-lutionary, the man whose extraordinary feat in Leipzig in 1933 moved the world. They are a remarkable revelation of the life and courageous fight waged by a son of the proletariat who was fully prepared to serve his class and his people with devotion. Georgi Dimitrov was familiar with the life of the young workers from whose midst he himself had emerged ; he was aware of their hopes, and understood their thoughts and strivings, and that is why each word of his goes straight to the hearts of the youth and stirs their thoughts, and this gives an impetus to the will of all young people. When a young reader goes through these pages, he will find in the person of the great revolutionary a friend, a comrade and a teacher. He will feel the direct effect of his lofty thought, of his penetrating gaze and his warm, fatherly feeling. Georgi Dimitrov advised youth to study, to study patiently, persistently and incessantly. How moving is his letter to Hans N., the German pioneer, who emigrated to Switzerland. 11 carries one away and stirs one. Dimitrov says: «And even in prison I studied. «... I took books from the prison library, mainly those from which I could study the history of Germany. Everything which I thought of particular importance, 1 took notes of. . . with fettered hands. Later, in court, I was able to make use of some of ту reading. «Besides this I studied French and English. I read a great deal and studied so as to overcome more easily ту moral and physical pain, as well as to put the time I spent in prison to the best possible use. That is why the nazis were unable to defeat me». To the youth Georgi Dimitrov left this behest — to be true to the proletariat, the class to which history has assigned the mission of transforming society. His letter to the Pioneers of Amsterdam and Nederhorst den Berg is a typical example of this: «Entering the ranks of the Pioneer movement you have joined in the liberation struggle of the proletariat. Never forget that you will be able to lead a worthy life only if you remain faiihful to this struggle.» Georgi Dimitrov taught proletarian youth to organize_ because only by o'ganizing could they become strong and worthy of their class and the tasks of the great struggle. He speaks of this in « The United Front and Youth», a chapter of his Report to the Seventh Congress of the Communist International in 1935, in his speech at the opening of the Sixth Congress of the Communist Youth International in 1935 and in many other letters, talks and speeches. Dimitrov taught the youth to fight, to be daring pioneers for the new life, to be conscious creators of their people’s history. The thoughts expressed in his letter to a group of Paris schoolboys, and published in this volume under the title « What а True Revolutionary Should Be Like», leave a lasting impression in the minds and hearts of all young people: « The life of Ernst Thaelmann shows that a true revolutionary and leader is built up in the fire of the class struggle, thorough-ly mastering revolutionary Marxism. It is not enough to possess a revolutionary temperament — one must also be skilled in mastering the weapon of revolutionary theory. It is not enough to know the theory — one must also have built up a firm bolshevik character and bolshevik irreconcilability. It is not enough to know what one must do — one must also have the courage to do it. One must be ready at all costs to do all that truly serves the interests of the working class. One must be able fully to subordinate one’s personal life to the interests of the proletariat.» Georgi Dimitrov, his life, the struggles he waged and his immortal cause, are an example to the people’s youth. Life subjected him to the severest trials. But he never complained. He began his working life as a printer’s devil, experiencing all the bitterness of the exploited worker; he passed through the grim school of the struggle. In his battles with the class enemy he gathered experience and knowledge. The books to which he devoted his scraps cf leisure in the daytime and his sleepless nights, helped him to attain the wisdom of the great teachers of the proletariat. Georgi Dimitrov was a proletarian Prometheus. He entered the arena of history as a Titan. The words he spoke to the youth, in his wise counsel to those who are preparing to take the fate of tomorrow’s world into their hands, the message of the great truth of our time is heard, told simply by a warmhearted comrade and teacher, and embodied in his moving example. Young readers will understand and appreciate this truth. And they will always be inspired by the life and work of Georgi Dimitrov.
