Since the 1940’s, biologists have achieved incredibly precise observations of the interior of cells, making possible such remarkable diagrams as the sectioned close-up on page 17 and the picture essay on the DNA molecule (pages 62 to 79). This volume is made up of text chapters, with marginal illustrations on specific points, and picture essays. The picture essays complement the chapters they follow, sometimes by illustrating the subject in depth, sometimes by taking up supplementary subject-matter. The two components of the book were designed to make up a unified whole, but each is self-contained and can be read separately. A glossary in the appendix defines the most essential terms in the vocabulary of cellular biology. THE AUTHOR JOHN PFEIFFER is an author who has been exploring the frontiers of Science as a writer for the lay reader. Born in New York City in 1915, he studied at Yale University. His books and articles chronicle a decade of advances in the life Sciences. For "DNA", published in 1960 in Natural History, he won the Thestinghouse Award THE CONSULTING EDITORS RENE DUBOS, member and professor of The Rockefeller Institute, is a microbiologist and experimental pathologist world-famous far his pioneering in antibiotics, including the discovery of tyrothricin. He has written, among other books, Mirage of Health and The Dreams of Reason. HENR Y M ARGENAU isEugene Higgins professor of physics and natural philoso-phy at Yale and an editör of the American Journal of Science. His books include Open from the American Association for the Advancement of Science. Among his books are From Galaxies to Man, The Changing Universe, The Human Brain and The Thinking Machine. He is a former Science editor of Jewsweek, a former Science director of C.B.S. and past president of the U.S. National Association of Science Writers. Vıstas and The Nature of Physical Reality. He has made noteworthy contributions in spectroscopy and nuclear physics. С. P. SNOW, physicist and author, has won international acclaim for his novels, including TheJVeıvMen, The Ajfair and Corridors of Pouoer, which ехрюге the relation-ship between the scientist and the rest of society. As Lord Snow, he was named a member of the British Ministry of Technology in 1964.
