Cross Bones" is the 8th book in Kathy Reichs’ Temperance Brennan series. It starts in Montreal with the autopsy of an apparent suicide victim, Avram Ferris, a Jewish businessman. His family are adamant he would not have killed himself and Brennan is called in as the condition of the body makes it difficult to confirm trajectory of the bullet to his head. On leaving the autopsy she is stopped by a man called Kessler who claims that Ferris was murdered and gives Brennan a picture that he says came from Israel and is the reason Ferris was killed. The photo is of a skeleton and Brennan believes it was from an archaeological excavation. When she calls Jake, an Archaeologist friend, and emails him a copy of the picture he becomes very excited and insists on visiting her straight away. Jake explains that the mystery surrounding the bones he thinks are in the picture Brennan has. They are rumoured to be the bones of Jesus Christ, found in Masada, Israel, years after the crucifixion. Upon further digging by Brennan, Detective Ryan and Jake they discover the actual bones are being looked after by a friend of Avram Ferris in Montreal. Brennan takes custody of the bones and after having them carbon dated discovers they are old enough and has to take them back to Israel where they belong. Ryan tags along after it is discovered the mysterious Kessler is also in Israel. Brennan’s friend, Jake, begs her not to hand the bones over to the authorities before she sees him. On getting to Israel Brennan quickly becomes embroiled in more mystery concerning not just the bones she brought from Montreal but a tomb purported to hold the remains of the Holy Family. But with danger everywhere she turns and no idea who to trust can she discover how Ferris’ murder fits in with this and are the bones really those of Jesus Christ? This is definitely one of my favourite Brennan books. The case is so intriguing, with modern murder, ancient mystery and a possible religious cover up it’s got something for everyone. I loved the way all the pieces fitted together. Nothing felt forced and the more I read about the bones discovered at Masada and the tomb of the Holy Family the more I wanted to look into it. I have been googling like crazy whilst reading this and definitely feel a little more knowledgable now. I’m not really religious but I could see how it could cause major problems if the bones were confirmed to be of Jesus and therefore confirmed that he didn’t die on the cross as the Bible says. Everything Christianity has been built on would be pulled out from under it and that would not be a good thing, so I was very interested to see how much factual information had gone into "Cross Bones" and I’m definitely thinking about reading "The Jesus Dynasty", the book written by Kathy Reichs’ friend, James Tabor, that inspired the storyline in "Cross Bones".
