Eleven original stories edited and introduced by GILES GORDON and ALEX HAMILTON. * The editors of this anthology of new short stories asked a number of distinguished writers of fiction each to produce a story about someone who lives or who has lived in the twentieth century, and who obsesses or intrigues them. The heroes are fact, at least their names are; their antics are fiction, to some degree. And the result is a highly entertaining book which suggests that there are no limits to imagination whatsoever! Giles Gordon is at present compiling a new anthology, HORRIBLE PEOPLE, with Martin Seymour-Smith. * Contents Introduction by Giles Gordon and Alex Hamilton 7 MICHAEL MOORCOCK A Dead Singer 9 RAYNER HEPPENSTALL The First Generation 31 ROBERT NYE The Whole Story 50 WILLIAM TREVOR Visions of Hell 70 BRIAN W. Imagine his grief and confusion, his sense of another notch cut in the tally of clerks' treachery, when he perceives that we have denied him the chance, without making use of it ourselves. The opportunity was there for a discourse on appearance and reality, on the techniques of fiction applied to actuality, on the tech. . . on vice versa in short, on the novel clutching at straws, at straws in the wind, on the wind in the willows, on the willows of change. But the time for that is when the book has been read. All that needs saying here and now is that the idea of Factions, a knight's move from Fictions, has enough dynamic interest to writers of today to inspire stories which carry the plan forward of their own momentum. It did happen to us once or twice, when soliciting contributions, to be rebuffed by writers who supposed that our book, taken as a whole, might not square with their own ambitions to be taken seriously in the world of letters. Well, if there is such a planet, there is no risk of the authors here assembled not being given a serious welcome. And in Factions they have seriously applied themselves. The challenge they were given was to produce a fiction blatantly Arrived from people and facts of the 20th century. Given this, and their strong individual talents, the results are entertainments, with something more for those in search of an argument. As they came in we have always been delighted, and very nearly as often astonished, and we dare believe that sometimes the authors have astonished themselves. In this spirit we urge you to turn the pages, and let style provide its own urgency. Notes on the contributors are to be found at the end of the book. G.G. A.H.
