Harry Rand studied at the City College of New York and at Harvard University, where he completed his doctorate on the iconography of Arshile Gorky in 1974. He has published numerous books and essays on 20th century painting and sculpture and is now Senior Curator of Cultural History at the National Museum of American History (Smithsonian Institution). Friedrich Stowasser, born in Vienna in 1928, called himself Friedensreich Hundertwasser Regentag Dunkelbunt. True to the colorful variety of his names, he has pursued many activities as a painter, architect, and ecologist, and as "one who awakens identities." This presentation of Hundertwasser's work in all of its different facets is guided by the artist's own view of himself and his purpose. And, because his work is, by nature, virtually inseparable from his biography, his artistic and political actions, and equally so from the "stories" of his (ostensibly) private life, a vivid portrait of the artist takes shape before the reader's eyes. Excerpts from conversations between the author and the artist lend a sense of immediacy and authenticity to the narration. 6 Einleitung 8 Jugend 16 Paris 34 Gerade Linien 42 Der frühe Stil 54 Weitere Reisen 58 POLITIK UND PHANTASIE 64 ÖKOLOGIE 65 DUNKELBUNT 68 Das stoffliche Leben 71 KUNST AUSSTELLEN 75 LEHRE 75 TACHISMUS 76 DAS LEBEN DER MATERIALIEN 83 DIE AVANTGARDE 86 Ein Malerleben 92 EINE EINSAME TÄTIGKEIT 94 HEIMKEHR 103 VERGANGENHEIT UND ZUKUNFT DER SCHÖNHEIT ' 4 Der reife Stil 107 FARBPARADIES 110 KÜNSTLERISCHES ERBE 111 REGENTAG 115 DAS IMAGE 115 KITSCH UND DAS FENSTERRECHT DER MIETER 117 DRUCKAUFLAGE: 10 000 125 KUNST UND RELIGION 126 Theorie und Wirklichkeit 135 BAUMMIETER 138 BRIEFMARKEN 152 Gute Malerei 154 QUALITÄT UND DAUERHAFTIGKEIT 155 SALZBURGER FESTSPIELE 156 MORAL 158 Gartenzwerge 161 RECYCLING DER TOTEN 165 DIE ERSTE FAHNE 165 SCHMUTZ 166 NACHDENKEN ÜBER DAS BAUEN 170 ARCHITEKTURDOKTOR 180 Das Hundertwasser-Haus 183 KÖNIGE 187 SCHLUSS-STEINE 187 PFLANZEN UND ARCHITEKTUR 188 LEBEN IN DER WELT 189 NEUSEELAND 190 DIE ZUKUNFT 198 Biographie
