They were produced occasionally, as the opportunity presented itself and the situation demanded. Like all contingent activity, however, these essays are specifications of broader commitments, not completely independent statements. That, at least, is the case I make in the introductory statement that follows. Years ago Warren Hagstrom wrote that the scientific community rests upon the exchange of information for recognition. This still seems to me entirely apt. Every piece collected here was, at one time or another, presented in spoken form. From the direct responses of colleagues on these occasions I have greatly benefited. Because their number is great and because many were unknown to me, I can extend my gratitude only indirectly. Those who read and commented on these papers in draft form are directly acknowledged in the essays themselves. It is customary when introducing collections of this sort for authors to say that, while various changes could have been made, they have preferred to reproduce them in their original form. My preference is much the same, but I must admit that, where alterations and additions have clearly been called for, I have made them. In only a few cases has this involved substantial change. For aesthetic purposes the system of annotations has been slightly altered. Most of the notes appear as footnotes, on the bottoms of pages. A few longer ones have been moved to the ends of the chapters. During the period these essays were written I received substantial assistance from various scholarly agencies. To the Ford Foundation, John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation, The Markle Foundation, and the UCLA Faculty Senate I would like, therefore, to record my gratitude. I prepared the final versions of these essays as a member of The School of Social Science at the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton, New X PREFACE Jersey. The combination of bucolic repose and collegial riposte proved particularly stimulating. With the exception of the paper on social structure, most of which was prepared in 1978, the publication dates of these papers reflect the approximate time of their actual composition.
