This volume is an attempt to outline the historical development of England from ancient times to the present day. Brief geographical notes and remarks on cultural development are included as well. It was compiled in strict accordance with the syllabus and curriculum requirements for Foreign Language Departments in Universities and Teachers' Training Colleges. The historical information supplied may be found especially useful for those whose interest takes them to the domain of English literature. Concise as it necessarily is, and dealing only with the more prominent events, circumstances and ideas, the book might nevertheless provide data necessary for the clarificatio of the historical background, the social need and the cultural significance of various literary phenomena.
