This book is specially written for pupils of English-language schools. The purpose of the book is to help you to know more about the history of the people whose native tongue you are learning. At the same time this reader of history in English will help you to master many new words and will enable you to discuss in English many problems on the development of human society. The book contains four chapters. Chapter One will acquaint you with the history of Britain from ancient times up to the fifth century. You I will learn about the peoples who inhabited Britain, how they lived and what they did. Chapter Two is the history of Britain in early medieval times-from the 5th to the 11th century The chapters that follow continue with the medieval history of Britain. Chapter Three will tell you the story of the Norman Conquest of Britain in 1066 and how as a result of the Conquest the life of the country changed in the 11th-12th centuries. In Chapter Four you will read about the medieval English towns, their origin, their privileges, and about the development of crafts and trade in the 13th-14th centuries. The pictures, maps, chronological lists, questions and assignments will I help you in your reading. Some questions are not difficult to answer if you read the text carefully, others are aimed at making you draw your' own conclusions or recollect and compare the things you learned before. Special assignments on the vocabulary will help you to memorize the new words better and will teach you to group them so that they could be used in discussing various problems in history. At the end of the book you will find a vocabulary. It is arranged in two word lists. In the list under "Words and Phrases" the words are, given in the same order as they appear in the text. This word list will help you to read the text and learn the unfamiliar words. The other list gives the geographical names mentioned in the book in alphabet( order. It will be of great use in reading the maps. Consult it also whenever you come across a geographical name in the text to make sure that you can pronounce it correctly.
