Penguin Modern Classics 2031 Fr. Rolfe ’Your Holiness would perhaps prefer to be called Leo, or Pius, or Gregory? ’ the Cardinal Dean inquired with imperious suavity. ‘ The previous English pontiff was Hadrian the Fourth: the present English pontiff is Hadrian the Seventh. It pleases Us; and so, by Our own impulse, We command.’ And so George Arthur Rose became Pope. Hadrian the Seventh is inextricably entangled with the author, Fr. Rolfe. Both were Catholic converts, both unsuccessful candidates for the priesthood, who had led bitter misunderstood lives, spurned by friends, bishops, and prelates. Fr. Rolfe put all his intensity of passion, all his hate and suffering, his dreams and fantasies into his creation of Hadrian VII, the shabby outcast suddenly able to right the wrongs of a lifetime and reshape the whole political world. It is this intuitive blend of insight and perversity, of satire and self-knowledge which makes Hadrian the Seventh so alive: here is the incisive, perspicacious Pope, infallible and all-knowing, and the lonely, sensitive Englishman, who ‘underneath his armour longed for sympathy’. * Frederick Rolfe was born of a respectable Dissenting family in i860, in Cheapside, and until 1886 worked as a schoolmaster, at which he was successful and well liked. He they became a Roman Catholic and attended college with a view to entering the priesthood. He was rejected, however, as a result of the extremely ‘difficult’ temperament and eccentricities that he displayed. In 1890 he went to Rome, where he was again refused ordination, but where he acquired a considerable knowledge of medieval history and possibly also the title Baron Corvo. From 1891 until 1898 he worked as an artist in Christchurch, Aberdeen, Holywell, and Oxford, living largely on credit, and often provoking violent rows with his friends. In 1900, after the publication of his first large work, Stories Toto Told Me, he met a publisher for whom he agreed to write Chronicles of the House of Borgia. He devoted the next six years to writing, and in this period produced, among other works, his two best-known novels Hadrian the Seventh and Don Tarquinio. But his way of life and his relations with his friends and publishers remained most unstable, and in 1907 he left for Venice. Here the ‘man demon’, as D. H. Lawrence called him, continued his way of life, writing The Desire and Pursuit of the Whole, living off his friends, and finally finding an outlet for his tangled emotions in extensive pederasty. He died in Venice in 1913.
