Beginning in the 1890s his artistic career was to carry on for more than half a century. Throughout his long life (1871—1960) Grabar was prominent both as an artist and as a scholar. Whichever sphere he was concerned in — whether painting, literary and critical writings, composing a history of Russian art, restoration of historical monuments or museum work - he was always closely linked with new artistic searchings and scientific discoveries. Soviet art theory owes its development largely to Grabar. “Whatever I was engaged upon — whether staging Arensky’s Raphael with the Mariinsky Theatre’s best cast in aid of indigent students at the Academy of Arts, or writing articles in The Niva and World of Art magazines, organizing Contemporary Art, or building a hospital, publishing a History of Russian Art, or reforming the Tretyakov Gallery, setting up a museum department, or making arrangements for the preservation and restoration of ancient monuments, or discovering new Raphaels and Frans Halses — all this was done out of my passion for art, was achieved in the name of art, for without art I could not have lived.” This extract from his book, My Life. A Monograph, is far from exhausting all the spheres of Igor Grabar’s artistic and social endeavour. Igor Emmanuilovich Grabar was born on March 25, 1871, in Budapest. His father, Emmanuil Ivanovich Grabar, a lawyer by education, was an inhabitant of Ugro-Russia, then a part of the Austro-Hungarian monarchy. In 1876, he emigrated to Russia, adopting the name of Khrabrov. In 1880, Grabar’s mother travelled with her nine-year-old son to Russia and entered him at the Yegoryevsk preparatory school in the province of Riazan (now the Moscow Region), where his father was teaching at the time. In 1882, they transferred the boy to M. Katkov’s lycée in Moscow. Grabar’s passion for drawing had already shown itself in early childhood. His first portraits of teachers and schoolfellows, and also his first landscapes date back to his years at school. After finishing the lycée in 1889, Grabar wanted to receive higher education and enrolled at the Law Faculty of St Petersburg University, there being no vacancies in the Faculty of History and Philosophy. This did not prevent him from attending a full course of lectures at the latter, however. When he graduated from the Law Faculty in 1893, he wanted to sit state examinations at the other faculty as well, but was denied this right because of the part he had played in student strikes. During his years as an undergraduate Grabar contributed to a number of magazines, including Dragonfly, Jester and The Niva (Cornfield). In the 1890s, A. Marx’s publishing house issued a series of Gogol’s short stories with illustrations by Grabar, who at that time signed himself Khrabrov. Amongst them were Christmas Eve, The Sorochintsy Fair and A May Night. His illustrations to the Greatcoat were particularly successful and captivated the reader by their sincerity and their sympathy for the fate of the “little man” — in this case a Petersburg official. The drawings are based on contrasts of light and shade; one of them depicts the gloom of a Petersburg night and the unexpectedly bright light of a shop window, before which Akaky Akakiyevich, the story’s main hero, dressed in his new greatcoat has stopped; in another of the drawings a candle flame picks out the stooping figure of Akaky Akakiyevich from amongst the shadows of his little garret, casting a light over his squalid lodgings. Whilst he was at University Grabar painted a small study of St Petersburg in winter entitled Roof Covered with Snow (1889). The contrast between the snow-sprinkled roof and the dark chimney-pots evokes the particular freshness of that sunny winter day.
