Steven R. Goldstein, M.D., is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at the New York University School of Medicine, and liaison physician to the Bellevue Hospital Center Department of Radiology. One of the first American physicians to utilize endovaginal scanning, Dr. Goldstein has spent more than ten years exploring the diagnostic potential of ultrasound, specifically in early pregnancy and menopause. He is widely regarded as a leading authority on the use of sonography in obstetric and gynecologic medicine. Top: Patient at 7 weeks LMP with vaginal spotting. Note one normal sac adjacent to sac whose trophoblastic-decidual reaction is breaking up. This “vanishing" sac could not be imaged at a followup scan 2 weeks later, while the normal embryo showed appropriate interval growth during that time. Routine examination with vaginal probe at time of bimanual exam revealed a 14-mm echogenic endometrium, which pathology identified as polyp with proliferation.
