Professor Caves's book provides a synthesis of what economic analysis has to say about multinational enterprise. Initially posing the question of why multiplant or multiunit enterprises operate across national boundaries, it goes on to explore the consequences: how they organize their activities, how they affect competition in product and labor markets, and how they influence income distribution, the production and dissemination of new technology, international capital markets, national fiscal systems, and economic welfare. The analysis throughout turns on the question of why multinational enterprises as administrative organizations displace transactions by independent parties through the marketplace, where these displacements do (and do not) take place, and what trends can be expected in this aspect of the multinational's activities. The book concludes by comparing the welfare evaluation of multinational enterprise that flows from economic analysis to the policy postures frequently taken by both source-country and host-country governments. It argues that these policies often reflect objectives other than the economic welfare of the country's citizens. The book combines the functions of a literature survey and textbook, drawing together threads of economic analysis that have previously been scattered and independent, and integrating a good deal of research and information that has fallen outside the orbit of economics.
